What is the difference between JAMB and Post UTME?
Every first-time Nigerian tertiary institution aspirant is guilty of asking this question: What is the difference between JAMB and Post UTME? Are you guilty of it now?
JAMB and Post UTME are words that are widely said in Nigeria every year. These words are commonly said by Nigerian university aspirants, who are to sit for examinations to set them eligible for admission into Nigerian higher institutions.
JAMB
JAMB stands for Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board, and it was established in 1978.
JAMB is concerned with the organizing of exams for Nigerians who are interested in getting admission into any of the Nigerian higher institutions.
This means that, for anyone of any nationality or age to get admission into a higher institution in Nigeria, they need to be screened by JAMB and score the required benchmark to be considered for admission into any of Nigeria’s academic higher institutions.
The Nigerian academic institutions whose admissions are regulated by JAMB include:
1. Public Universities
2. Private universities
3. Public polytechnics
4. Private polytechnics
5. Colleges of education
6. Specialized colleges
7. Nigerian defence academy
8. Other national premier paramilitary institutions in Nigeria like the Nigerian Maritime academy or Nigerian police academy.
The JAMB examination is held every year, and millions of Nigerians sit for it, JAMB examinations are conducted in special centres called JAMB CBT centres.
CBT means Computer-based test; this means that JAMB examinations are not done with pencil or pen, but with computers. Formerly, the JAMB examination was a PPT (pen and pencil type) exam.
POST UTME
This is commonly known as Post UTME. UTME means Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
This is an examination that is conducted for higher institution aspirants, in their preferred school of choice. This examination is usually held after JAMB examinations, as aspirants who met the JAMB cut-off mark for their school of choice are qualified to sit for the Post UTME or post JAMB examinations.
So, the ‘post’ prefix means that the examination holds after JAMB.
JAMB as an exam body only sets an official cut-off mark for every school in Nigeria. But the different schools that will conduct the post-UTME will set their cut-off mark, which must not go below the cut-off mark set by JAMB.
