OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY (OAU)- Brief history, address, etc

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)  is located in the historic city of Ile-Ife in present-day Osun state. It was established in 1961 by the Federal Government of Nigeria and named after the former premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who also doubles as one of the founding fathers of the school.

Being a student of Obafemi Awolowo University comes with a lot of academic perks as the institution has several research centres and learning institutes, where students and staff can conduct studies on related matters. The research centres include Atmospheric Research and Information Analysis Lab and the Drug Research and Production Unit. The academic institutions in the university include the Institute of Cultural Studies, Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, and Institute of Public Health.

Currently, OAU is a top tertiary institution in the country with 13 faculties and is home to over 35,000 students, plus one (Are you not going to be admitted into the prestigious OAU?)

Resumption date  

Academic activities are expected to resume on the 20th of March 2024, and this means that students are expected to be on campus on or before the 20th of March to continue their studies.

Admission Requirements

Here is the part where your heart will beat for a minute, until you find out that you satisfied the requirements to be considered for admission into Obafemi Awolowo University, either through UTME or Direct Entry. Ready to take a look? Check below:

OAU admission requirements for UTME candidates

  • Candidates must have reached the age of 16.
  • Candidates must have at least 6 (six) Credits grades in their O’level result (s). The subjects must include English Language, Mathematics, and three other subjects related to their preferred course of study. 
  • Candidates must not score less than 200 in JAMB UTME examination
  • Candidates must sit for OAU post-UTME screening examination and must perform very well in the examination.
  • Only O’level results from ONE sitting result are accepted for admission into the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
  • Candidates must choose the correct subject combination for their courses.
  • Candidates must meet the stipulated cutoff marks for their preferred courses to gain admission into the university.

OAU admission requirements for Direct Entry candidates

  • Candidates must have at least five (5) Credits in their O’level result. This must include English Language and Mathematics. Note that two-sitting result is not allowed.
  • Candidates must have also gotten to the age of 16.
  • Candidates must get JAMB Direct entry form from JAMB to apply.
  • Candidates should have any of the following certificates: OND, ND, NCE, IJMB, Cambridge A level, BSc, HND, ICAN.
