Latest WAEC news 2024

The WAEC examination is an annual academic process every year. It’s an examination that qualifies secondary school final-year students as certified graduates of the secondary school system.

The WAEC news for each year starts from the commencement of WAEC registration to the release of the WAEC results. These activities are what the WAEC candidates for every year will have to follow and participate in, before, during, and after the WAEC examination every year.

WAEC registration

The first WAEC news to be circulated is the commencement of the year’s WAEC registration exercise.

WAEC registration marks the beginning of the process of documenting students who satisfy the requirements stipulated by WAEC, and are qualified to sit for the WAEC SSCE. The WAEC registration for 2024 began on the 2nd of February 2024, and the registration fee for WAEC 2024 is eighteen thousand Naira only (N18,000).

Requirements for WAEC registration

Without these requirements being satisfied by the students, it will just be assumed that there was no registration for WAEC, as no candidate will be cleared to sit for the WAEC examination without fulfilling the terms of these important WAEC registration requirements.

Students preparing to sit for WAEC SSCE are not allowed to register on their own, they are to register under their school (examination centre).

 The common requirements for WAEC registration include:

• 9 or 8 subjects (Mathematics and English language are compulsory subjects)
• Passport photograph
• Name and surname of candidates.
• Centre number
• Biometric data capturing

These details are necessary for the WAEC registration process to be successful. 

WAEC examination time frame

The WAEC examination ran for 42 days, in 2024. It began on Tuesday, 3rd of April 2024, and ended on Tuesday, 15th of May 2024. 

The examination featured a total of 57 subjects, which include 35 trade subjects. The WAEC examination 2024 ended on the 15th of May 2024, and post-WAEC activities kick off immediately. Post-WAEC examination process range from the period of marking the WAEC scripts by WAEC officials, to the time of the release of the WAEC results.

Post-WAEC process: Marking of WAEC Booklets

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) will announce the commencement of the marking process of the May/June SSCE examination shortly after the exam.

The script marking is for over 1.6m candidates that sat for the WAEC examination 2024. 

The marking of the WAEC examination is projected to take not more than 45 days, as the council is bent on meeting its rule of releasing examination results 45 days after the end of the WAEC’s last paper. The marking is to be done in 85 venues scattered across the country. 

Release of WAEC Results

The last WAEC news to be released is the announcement that “WAEC results have been released”. After the script marking process by WAEC, the marked scripts will be computed and uploaded on the WAEC result portal, for WAEC candidates to access their results, evaluate their performances, and make those important decisions that are common with secondary school graduates. Examples of such decisions include applying for admission to further their studies, or to start learning a skill.

 The result-checking process can either be done through SMS or through the WAEC result portal
